How Does Your Garden Grow

We finally did it - we have an herb garden.  Okay fine, not so much a GARDEN in the traditional sense but a nice row of plants.  Same diff and I'm still proud of ourselves.....okay again, not so proud of US exactly but happy that my parents brought these to us the last time they visited (save the NEW mint plant that Bill's dad brought us.  We managed to quickly kill the last one).  In any event, we have the herbs and they are so much more convenient than buying them each week at the store.  We are now the owners of mint, rosemary, basil, thyme, Italian parsley, oregano, sage, dill and chives.  We stayed away from cilantro because I have yet to meet anyone who can actually keep it alive.  If you have been successful, please tell us how.  I'm a little worried about our plants because they bake in the sun all day.  I know the little info card that came with them says "Full Sun" but the basil and parsley aren't looking good.  I also water them everyday and I'm not sure I'm supposed to.  Maybe I'm drowning them??  For something that's basically a weed, these things frustrate me.  We don't have a good track record with keeping foliage alive (see above mint plant comment) so wish us luck!

  1. yay for herb gardens!!! i have grown cilantro - and i have 3 cilantro plants now. the trick is to pinch off the flowers (or buds rahter) as soon as you see them. that goes for basil, dill, and probably more too. i have trouble with things in pots too. i have been told that they need more water, especially if they are in full sun because the pots heat the roots up much more quickly than if they were in the dirt. so they get thirsty more often. i try to water my stuff in pots in the morning and at night.
    good luck!

  2. Hmmm . . . we don't water ours at all--even in full Georgia sun. Once they are established and they are getting a drink from the rain, I say no watering (though ours are in the ground rather than pots). And Melissa is right too--pick pick pick--if you are snipping buds and using the leaves a lot they will grow much better.

Have fun! Audrey will be able to help plant next year.

About This Blog

Laura began this blog with the intention of someday chronicling our children's lives since our family is spread out from east coast to west. We wanted a way for family to get up-to-date news. Since we had no children at the time, it became a blog that followed our (her) foodie thoughts. Cooking, eating out and drinking wine are huge hobbies of ours so it only seemed fitting. Now that children are here we're going to attempt to meld the two together. You will notice "Foodies" and "Family" links at the top left of the page underneath the header photos. Use these links to focus in on the entries you want to read and bypass the others. We hope you enjoy.
